We offer a variety of small, personal weaving classes. If you see a class that you would like to take but it is not
scheduled or at a time that you can’t come please email Robin to schedule a class.
Fall 2022: I started to offer virtual classes in 2021, but it seems difficult to offer the kind of class I like to present.
The exception is our Wednesday Weavers—Zoom is great for that! And we throw in a few in-person activities as well.
Weave Like a Viking - taught by Siobhan Harlakenden
Weave Like a Viking - taught by Siobhan Harlakenden
In this class Siobhan will teach you how a Viking age cloth called Vararfeldur was created. It is a pile woven cloth resembling a sheepskin that was worn as cloaks but now can be used for all sorts of wonderful adornments, decorations, and home goods. For the class we will weave a small piece that will lend itself to being made into a throw pillow or bag. Students will need to already have experience with basic weaving and have a loom they can pre-warp and transport to the class.
You may use a rigid heddle loom or a table loom with 2 or 4 shafts.
A few looms are available for rent but will need to be picked up prior to class to give you time to warp. Rigid heddle looms rent for $25 and 4-shaft looms rent for $40. Contact Robin about that.
Please come to class with a 1-1/2 yard long, 12”-15” wide warp already on the loom. It may be set up as plain weave or 2/2 twill. Both work but twill is the historically accurate option. EPI can be anything between 8-12. I will provide the wool locks but you should come with weft yarn or you may buy some in the shop. Wool warp is recommended. If you want to purchase from Robin look at this yarn. Also bring a tapestry comb or a fork. There are also tapestry beaters available for purchase at the Meridian Jacobs shop.
NEW DATE: Wednesday, December 4, 2024, 11-3
When you sign up for this class please email Robin with info about your loom (type of loom, width) so we can plan space.
Teacher: Siobhan Harlakenden is enthusiastic about all things wool. She is a delightful teacher and brings her interest in historical textile construction to her classes, the latest of which was Medieval Distaff and Spindle Spinning at Lambtown 2023.
