We specialize in Solano County grown wool, but there is one other favorite here.
Timm Ranch Sport Weight Yarn - 2021
Timm Ranch Sport Weight Yarn - 2021
Exclusive! Locally grown wool yarn from the Timm Ranch in Solano County, California. Our 2021 Timm Ranch yarn is a beautiful creamy white 2-ply sport weight yarn. I selected 230 pounds of the finest wool on the Timm’s shearing day. I skirted fleeces and shipped the wool to Mountain Meadow Wool in Wyoming where it was scoured, carded, and spun. There is a minor amount of vegetable matter in the yarn because Mountain Meadow does not use any chemical process to remove it.
Yarn is available on cones and in skeins. Yarn was spun at 1546 yds/lb. The wool was scoured before processing, but the coned yarn has not been washed after spinning. Washing allows the yarn to bloom and skeins have been washed. When you use coned yarn you need to allow for the changes that happen to the yarn after washing. The photos show coned yarn at 17 wpi (wraps/inch) and skeined yarn at 13 wpi. I sett this yarn at 8 epi for most weaving projects. Knitting friends say that #5 needles are about right. The dyed shawl in the photo is woven of this yarn sett at 8 epi.
I have just added bundles of four skeins of yarn that I use for dyeing with natural dyes or acid dyes. These skeins have not been pre-washed, but the dyeing will give them the “bloom” that washing does.
YN-TR-21-C Cones weigh 2 pounds; approximately 3092 yards; $65/lb.

YN-TR21-2-4 Four two-ounce skeins; $58/bundle
Story of the Timm Ranch:
The Timm Ranch is located north of Vacaville on the east side of the Vaca Mountains. Susan Timm’s grandfather bought the ranch in the early 1900’s and, although much of the ranch is leased to a cattle rancher, Susan runs about 85 ewes there. Susan’s father started with Targhee sheep and then added Polypay and Rambouillet rams to the flock. Susan’s sheep are descendants of this blend of breeds and produce a fine, soft wool. The clip from three years ago tested at 21.4 microns.
