Devil's Claw Seedpods for decorative and craft use
Devil’s Claw seedpods are striking in their appearance. The large fruit of this plant splits into two “claws” while drying and it is these dried pods that can add interest to a table arrangement or may be used in a variety of craft projects, including adding black fiber to woven baskets. Be aware that the points on those claws are sharp! Devil’s Claw, of the genus Proboscidea and native to the desert Southwest (U.S.), is considered a weedy plant that gains a foothold in waste areas. It grows around the edges of my sheep pasture. It is not intended for you to spread any seeds that may linger in the open pods.
The seedpods are light weight but they must be sent in a box to protect from damage. I can fit 20 seedpods in a small (7”x7”x6”) box that can ship for first class postage. The medium USPS flat rate box can hold 35 seedpods.
The photos on gray paper show 10 seed pods each. Those are two standard pieces of paper to give you scale of the seedpods. Keep in mind that when you pull these out of the box they may be all “connected”—picture a pile of coat hangars that have the hooks caught on each other. They can be taken apart, but they are not wrapped individually in the box.
