Learn to Spin
Learn to Spin
I used to schedule a series of three classes but it is difficult to find dates that work for a group. Now I offer a single 3-hour class to get started. Learn to spin wool yarn using a spinning wheel. You will learn spinning terminology, about the different types of wheels, and the basics of how wool is spun into yarn. You will be spinning by the end of your first session!
Some people are good with one class and discover more about spinning on their own. Spinning requires a lot of practice and I think its good to have some time between the first and second session. This is why I don’t teach the Learn to Spin class as a full day class.
We can discuss a second session to be taught privately or with the group. At that class you will learn to ply your singles yarn, ending up with 2-plied yarn, if we didn’t get that far in the first class. We will also discuss fiber prep and use handcards and flickers. We will discuss how to choose the right wool and the appropriate spinning style for your desired use. You will have the opportunity to spin on several models of wheels made by Ashford, Clemes & Clemes, and Schacht and to find out what type of spinning wheel suits you and how to purchase one. You will spin a variety of hand-carded and commercially prepared fiber. Also covered in additional class sessions are how to skirt a fleece (when fleeces are available) and various types of fiber preparation.
