Exploring Close to Home - Jenkinson Lake

I’m ready to start sharing lamb photos since the last 30 hours has been very busy in the barn, but I wanted to finish the blog posts about my recent hiking trips.

It was just a week ago that we drove to my son and DIL’s house in Pollock Pines and went on a quick hike through the forest, just past their driveway. That’s Ginny, and their dog, Kirin on the trail.

This is north of Jenkinson Lake and was within the evacuation zone for the Caldor Fire. Thankfully this area, so near to Matt and Kaleena’s house, did not burn. There has been some brush clearing and burning, necessary to prevent future huge fast-moving fires.

You can see a difference where there has been fuels management and where there has not.

Our trail tied into a short Nature Trail that is part of the trail system around Jenkinson Lake. This old wooden flume is alongside the trail.

Matt and Kirin give some context for size of this flume.

Jenkinson Lake. Where we were walking should be under water.

That cable normally supports buoys to mark off the portions of the lake to avoid with boats. You can see one white buoy at the far side of the finger of water on the left in the photo. This whole thing should be under water.

This is looking the opposite direction from the last photo.

Walking on the trail back to the house we had a view of the more distant hills. You can’t tell in this photo but that farthest ridge was burned in the Caldor Fire.
